PPTP or OpenVPN?

Posted on 27 May 2013

Deciding on the type of "protocol" to use for your VPN is mainly down to security and what device you are using. iPad's and iDevices only support PPTP and some people prefer one choice over another.

For VPNs, the 2 main choices are PPTP and OpenVPN. We also include SOCKS (SSH Tunnel) and HTTP proxies, but those are not a VPN protocol and work slightly different.

OpenVPN is recommended for Security and ease of use, VPNSecure provides a easy to use Windows client and Tunnelblick "Mac OSX" for OpenVPN users and many tutorials on our VPN Support site for all other devices.

PPTP is recommended for use where OpenVPN is not available, PPTP is regarded as an insecure VPN protocol, while robust it does have it's security flaws as outlined in this article.

When choosing a VPN protocol we always recommend using OpenVPN where available. If you are still un-sure please contact our customer support staff if you have any specific questions.
